Aligning Cascading Goals
Updated over a week ago

If your organization utilizes our cascading configuration, you have the option to align your goals illustrating how certain goals contribute to the overarching success and fulfillment of higher-level goals. With this configuration, your organization operates on three distinct goal tiers, offering various options for labeling each tier. A popular arrangement entails labeling these tiers as Company (1st Level), Department (2nd Level), and Individual (3rd Level).

Example:

The recommended approach for organizations utilizing this configuration is to start by establishing 1st level goals, followed by 2nd and 3rd level goals. This sequential approach facilitates a smoother alignment process.

There are two ways to create cascading goals that align with higher-level goals.

Option 1: Align During Goal Creation

  1. In the Goals application, click the green ‘+’ sign in the far right to create a new goal. For a more detailed guide on goal creation, visit this article.

  2. On the goal creation screen, under the ‘Goal Details’ tab, first indicate the level of goal you are creating under ‘Type.’ The options available vary based on account settings and user level. 2nd and 3rd-level goals are the only goal types that can be aligned.

  3. Under the ‘Align to Parent’ field, you will see a dropdown of any available higher-level goals that your new goal can cascade to. Select the appropriate option depending on the goal type you have created. Next to this field, you will notice the "Filter Goals by Department" dropdown. This allows you to select a specific department and narrow the list of available options in the "Align to Parent" field.

Option 2: Align from the Cascade Report View

  1. Navigate to the Cascade Report view within the Goals application.

  2. Beside the goal you want to create a cascading goal for, click the three-dot menu. If you need to expand the cascade to see any other aligned goals, you can click the cascade icon in the bottom right.

  3. From the three-dot menu, select the “Create supporting” option.

  4. This will take you to the goal creation page and the ‘Goal Details’ tab will automatically have the ‘Type’ and ‘Align to Parent’ fields pre-populated. Click ‘Create’ once the other fields are complete.

Viewing Your Cascading Goals

Regardless of which method you choose, you can verify that your goal was successfully aligned by navigating to the Cascade Report view and utilizing the cascade icons in the bottom right of the goal cards.

You can also verify this information in the ‘All Goals’ view under the ‘Parent’ column.
