Cascading Managers
Updated over 10 months ago

In some cases, Performance Reviews and Check-Ins are conducted by a primary manager with the oversight of the primary manager’s manager and so on. We call this Cascading Managers.

Terminology

Many organizations have a unique set of terms or position titles. For example, you may call managers “supervisors” or employees “team members”. It is important to know the application terminology to understand how best to set up your account.

  • Primary Manager: This is the manager who oversees the day-to-day activities and responsibilities of the employee. In most cases, this is the person checking in with, evaluating, and coaching the employee.

  • Secondary Manager: This is a manager who may temporarily oversee day-to-day activities or project-based tasks of the employee. In most cases, this manager is checking in with and coaching the employee but, on a limited basis.

  • Cascading Manager: This is a manager of managers.

  • Direct Reports: Employees who directly report to a Primary Manager.

Settings Options

The cascading structure settings are limited to Help Desk users, meaning your account admin will need to reach out to [email protected] to update these settings. Once the cascading structure is enabled you have two options for the cascading managers: full edit privileges or view only privileges.

Cascading Managers - Full Edit Privileges

By design, Primary Managers, Secondary Managers, and Cascading Managers have full access to view and edit all Direct Reports and employees below them in the organizational chart. This enables managers of managers to create, evaluate, or make changes to reviews and other records for all employees within their organizational tree.

In the example below, Melissa can create and edit all records for her direct reports: Preston, Mary, and even Greg as she is a secondary manager for him.

Since Cascading Edit is enabled, Melissa can also create and/or edit records

for:

  • 2nd level Reports - Tina, Chris, Jody, and Matt

  • 3rd level Reports - Elizabeth, Phil, and Andy

Cascading Managers - View Only Privileges

View Only Privileges restricts creation and edit capabilities to only Primary and Secondary Managers. Cascading Managers can still view records for employees within their organizational hierarchy but are not able to edit those records.

In the example below, Melissa can create and edit all records for her direct reports but is only able to view records for employees within the rest of her organizational

tree.

  • 1st level (Direct Reports) - Full Edit privileges

  • 2nd level - View only

  • 3rd level - View only

Email Notifications

Primary Managers receive email notifications related to their direct reports’ records.

Secondary Managers also receive these notifications for whom they are assigned as a Secondary Manager. Cascading Managers do not receive email notifications.
